PELVIC PAIN / SIJ DYSFUNCTION

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction can result in low back and / or gluteal pain and is an important differential diagnosis in the assessment of both low back and hip presentations.

The SIJ is an inherently stable joint, however this stability is influenced greatly by muscles such as our gluteals and hamstrings as well as ligamentous tissue.

SIJ instabilities can therefore be the result of either trauma (acute or repeated micro-trauma) or significant muscle imbalances.

Physiotherapy management will include a comprehensive assessment of not only your SIJ but the surrounding joints and tissues such as your lumbar spine and hip.

As your SIJ acts as a load transfer between your trunk and lower limbs, a functional assessment is needed to determine how your SIJ behaves under load and in specific situations.

Physiotherapy Management may include:

  • Soft Tissue Techniques
  • Taping
  • Scapula Retraining
  • Postural education and advice
  • Strengthening
  • Dry Needling
  • Joint mobilisation
